Are you tired of the same old boring 5.10s at the Pup Tent? It may be time for something a little more toxic! Once a scary trad lead, it's been fully retrobolted for your stemming pleasure. Steep moves off the ground lead to a ledge, from which you follow the obvious corner, moving right under the roof. The bolts are on the left wall because of the rock quality, but you climb mostly facing to the right, so that combined with some questionable holds makes this feel a little more exciting than it would if everything was solid and the bolts were on the right. This has fun movement, but if you don't like some wiggly holds, it is best to stay away.

Climb leisurely past some reaches to good holds through the first 3 bolts until you arrive at a large undercling and the start of the crux.  Bigger pulls to smaller holds through the 4th bolt will deposit you a a good horizontal and rest.  Get back whatever you can because the next section past 3 pins is another 11+ crux topped by an airy mantle to the chains.

This route is a little dirty but has great movement throughout; so 2+ stars seems good.

This route starts in a dihedral and then follows an arête feature. Stay on the right side up until you reach a shelf. Finish on an overhanging crack in the corner.

Climb dark rock that is still rather dirty past bolts to the left of a crack feature. Make a few tricky moves to gain a large ledge below a beautiful, golden face. Clip a couple of closely spaced bolts and go hard left to the arete to finish with airy moves to the anchor.

Start with vertical climbing with good holds...with a crux down low, and continue up, slightly angling left towards the anchors.

Climb the left side of the slabby, black pinnacle. A somewhat tricky move off the ground leads to a chossy ledge before a smooth face. When the going gets thin, you can reach left and grab the arete. There is a crimpy, smeary crux between third and fourth bolt. It is listed as a 5.8, but it seems a bit harder than other 5.8s in the area.

Climb an abruptly difficult wall into a steep dihedral, then either style the arete or try your luck at jamming the crack.

Start in a shallow corner, then move right at the first bolt. Climb up to a ledge, then follow the crack in a corner to a hand rail. Traverse right, then pull through the roof on huge holds. Ascend easier climbing to the top. It is fun the whole way.

; clip one bolt on top. Head into the light-colored dihedral. Clip a bolt and continue up the stem box clipping bolts to the roof. Traverse right into dark, well-featured rock (crux) and continue on until you find chains. Get it? It starts light and gets dark...just like Aniken Skywalker/ Darth Vader...I really should get a life.

Climb up a bouldery block clipping one bolt to move right to a black face. Clip another bolt, play with some pockets, pull through a bulge (crux), and continue up on well featured rock to chains. It is usually shady by noon.

Climb around the left side of a small roof and then up the face, stemming to the left if desired. At the fourth bolt, move right and around the arete to the last bolt. Climb onto the large ledge to finish. The fifth and final bolt is hard to see when climbing. Don't go up the dirty crack.

This is the best climb below 10 in the Pup Tent.

Addendum: this is a near vertical face climb protected by bolts.

This is the last climb (left most) of the Pup Tent as you turn the corner to the Southern Fried Prows. Look for a narrow rotten prow that turns to cutter varnished rock in 20' feet. Start up on somewhat nasty rock to pull through a roof on small edgy holds (crux). Continue up sharp clean goodness for 60 feet to a ledge and then 20 more feet of fun. This has good exposure and lots of bolts. We climbed this about three years ago in the fall. We sent down a washing machine-sized block when cleaning it up. We may have a had a few PBRs. It was totally worth it.

In my opinion, this is one of the best routes at the Pup Tent.  The rock is bomber and it has great, engaging moves all the way to the anchors.

Climb a colorful face past well-spaced bolts to a heartbreaking crux right at the anchors.

This route starts on some darker rock at the leftmost end of the Pup Tent before turning the corner to the large cave with Cease and Desist. Head up relatively easy terrain clipping bolts to a roof (1st crux). Pull through, face another roof (2nd crux), and continue on to a ledge. Head up the crack. Place some fingers to off fingers gear and finally find the shared anchors with BBTB. We trundled a washing machine size block when cleaning this route. Scared the hell out of Susan Helms who lived at the ranch below; she said she almost called the sherriff after hearing the carnage. Glad she didn't.

Start on a slight overhang with good holds. Continue up the steep face with sidepulls, crimps, and a little run out section. Move right to the roof which is the crux.

Climb a flake feature on black rock to steep climbing on golden rock with good holds. There are a number of long reaches between big holds with with a couple moves that will make you think around the third bolts. At the top, use your balance to clip the anchor.

Starts just right of a bolted black pillar about half way down the Pup Tent area.  There is an obvious, wide, guano-filled crack about thirty feet off the ground.  You will be stemming around this and up to a small roof.

Pull the roof and be prepared for 25+ feet of sweetness on gently overhanging incuts.  The "tooth" is key, stick it or suffer the consequences.

There are fixed lowering biners at the anchor.

Crack of Despair is super desperate with a crux that will stymie you. Its moves are hard. This looks like you can jam above crux, but don't unless you like your hands chewed up by the sharp rock. Just layback on it. Good luck through the crux...feet are key to unlocking the sequence.

This is probably the best 10 at the Pup Tent, long and sustained on excellent stone.  It is a must do route when visiting here.

Boulder up through a quartzite band to the first bolt in gray rock, fun moves up and left lead to rest stances.  Choose your line heading up to a large block and ledge below the spectacular headwall finish.

Hoist yourself onto the block and climb incuts to a chickenhead at the anchors, outstanding.

The technical crux is midway and the endurance crux is on the headwall.

Climb easy jugs and incuts to a bouldery, thin dihedral.  Move right onto the giant flake and finish as for

Subtle Knife

Jennifer's World may be one of the best routes at the Pup Tent depending on who you talk to. It is steep, long, and varied with an old school feel due to the fixed gear.

Start on the arete to the left of

Eternity

, the 5.11 corner system. Climb black, featured rock on big holds clipping two bolts on the face to the left before passing the first small roof with big holds and somewhat long reaches. Climb the golden face above with ample holds and clipping two fixed pieces of gear in the crack, a nut, and a pin. Climb to a horizontal break and move left, clipping a bolt above. If you desire, you can back clean the nut to reduce rope drag. Clip a second bolt above the break and climb a tenuous little crux before gaining good holds once again and a rest below the final, fantastic roof. Using a key sidepull below the roof and reaching up to a solid finger jam pull to a big jug below the anchors.

Girls With Guns

(10d).  Climb past pockets to a shallow, left-facing flake and up to a no hands stance below a small roof.

Pulling the roof is the crux, fortunately there are nice, albeit sharp and crimpy, holds above the roof.  Some balancy stemming gets you to the chain anchor.

Start left and behind the bolted black pillar.  The crux move midway up the route where you have to... step up to the downward pointing flake.

Fun moves on good stone, nice addition to the area in the easy to mid 10 range.

Climb up the left side of the block, past some nice pockets to a chain anchor.  Fun moves on good rock.  A nice warm up route for the area.

This has a bouldery start off a rail to a big reach. Then climb sustained, awesome sidepulls and reach moves that involve some thought and keep your feet dancing...and the secret beta:

A huge jug way left just before the chains.

Start in a slanting crack and follow the arete features to anchors at a horizontal break. This has technical and sustained climbing in the upper half.

This is on a black buttress just off the Hadley Gulch Trail. Gatehouse is the first climb you encounter in the Pup Tent area and one of the easiest. Ledgy and with good holds, this is one of the better first leads at the Tent. Take care not to knock some of the choss on the top ledge down on your belayer.

Fun climbing on golden rock with a lot of good, positive holds to a reachy crux at the third bolt, going hard left to a good hold on the bulge. Finish by trending right on more good holds before topping out on the ledge.

Start on the left side of a chimney and traverse right across it on big holds to the first bolt. Continue up on well-featured, pocketed rock clipping bolts as you go.  Top out on a spacious ledge with chain anchors.  The crux comes after the third bolt pulling through slightly more than vertical terrain.

One of the best routes at the Pup Tent; long, strenuous, and great rock.

Climbs up the undulating wall, through a triangular roof and up a steep, thin crack.  Finish up and right.

This is the arête just left of

Country Style Pork Rib

. We did it a few years ago in the spring. It has a few bolts and some good movement to a ledge with chains. It is really easy other than pulling up on the ledge.

Two short overhangs with moderate climbing in between lead to an awesome, exposed crack finish.

Easy (5.9ish) climbing up the steep face leads to a V4 boulder problem through the awesome body-length roof.  Some Cliffhanger-like beta got me through the roof and had me smiling at the chains.  Fun route!

This climb has it all. Start out on face holds, transition into crack, and beat the pump on gymnastic crux headwall guarding the anchors.

Test your vertical jump at the start, and then climb through some scary, loose rock before clipping the first bolt.  From here, the rock improves dramatically.  Make some fun pulls off of incut edges to the second bolt.  The crux comes between the second and third bolts in the form of big pulls off of small crimps.  A few more moves gets you to the mantel top-out.  The anchors are above the ledge.

The hardest moves are getting off the ground. Once past this, nice climbing takes you up a face and into a corner, with some more harder moves getting over a small bulge. It can be climbed with just bolts or you can plug a cam in the crack to eliminate the runout.

This is a variation of Hanu that skips the crux roof and climbs the corner crack of Stimulus Package instead. Climb up the steep face of Hanu, but instead of breaking right, break left into the overhanging hand crack on Stimulus Package. Fun variation that avoids the 5.11 cruxes on Stimulus Package and Hanu.

This is on the right side of an obvious block 100 yards down the Pup Tent trail.  It can be silty due to runoff from above.

This ascends the striking arete with orange and black rock.  Climb sustained flakes and pinches with an ever steepening angle, leading to a committing move just below the anchors.

Easy climbing to a cruxy move, find the magical handhold for the send.  Pull up onto a balancy shelf, move to a dark flake on the left.

It is interesting the whole way.

Climb a tricky face to a block below a hanging groove. This is a good warm-up route.

Start up ledgy terrain that is steeper than it appears from the ground. Some thoughtful moves take you to a ledge and some more easy climbing to the chains.

Start in the dihedral. Enjoy some awkward movement with stemming and such to the finger crack.

Climb the middle of the block, reachy crux at the top.  Just left of
